I'm Brandon Wening — CFI, CFII, AGI, IGI, and Commercial Pilot (ASEL) — and I bring real-world, cross-country experience from all over the country to every lesson. Whatever you're chasing, my job is to make the training enjoyable and make you the best pilot you can be.
About Your Instructor

I'm Brandon Wening, better known around the airport as The Instrument Guy. I hold my CFI, CFII, AGI (Advanced Ground Instructor), IGI (Instrument Ground Instructor), and Commercial Pilot certificate (Airplane, Single-Engine Land).
With almost 600 total flight hours — including hundreds of hours instructing and hundreds of cross-country hours flown across many different parts of the country — I bring a broader, more practical perspective than a lot of instructors who've only ever flown the local pattern. Different airspace, different weather, different airports: that experience shows up in how I teach.
My goal is simple: meet you where you are, work toward your goals, keep the training genuinely enjoyable, and turn you into the safest, most capable aviator you can be — not just someone who can pass a checkride.
Not an hour-building instructor
I'm not racking up flight hours on my way to an airline job — teaching is what I actually want to do. That means real continuity: you won't get handed off to someone new halfway through your training, and I'm genuinely invested in your progress, not using you to build my own logbook.
I also carry a specialization not many instructors can offer: hundreds of hours in Grumman aircraft, and recognition as Indiana's only active GOPA Pilot Familiarization Program instructor.

Why they call me The Instrument Guy
Instrument flying isn't just something I teach — it's the reason for my name. As a CFII, I've flown actual IFR cross-country trips through real weather in many different parts of the country, not just simulated hood time under a view limiting device in clear skies.
Whether you're starting your instrument rating from scratch, need an IPC to stay current, or want an instructor who genuinely flies in the clouds, I'll help you build the precision and confidence that makes IFR flying second nature.

Indiana's Grumman specialist
Beyond general instruction, I've logged hundreds of hours flying Grumman aircraft and have a depth of type-specific knowledge most instructors simply don't have. If you fly — or are looking to buy — a Grumman, I can get you truly comfortable in the airplane, not just checked off.
I'm officially listed as the only active flight instructor in Indiana for the Grumman Owners and Pilots Association (GOPA) Pilot Familiarization Program (PFP) — the program many owners and insurers rely on for type-specific checkouts and familiarization training in Grumman aircraft.

I'm based out of KHFY — Indy South Greenwood Airport in Greenwood, Indiana, and proudly serve pilots and students throughout the greater Indianapolis area.
